fun fact: did you know that Gertrude Stein was not only a literary giant but also a huge matron of the arts?
in addition to hosting regular Saturday art salons that the likes of Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald attended, she was one of the first to recognize the greatness of artists like Picasso and Henri Matisse — she even bought Woman with a Hat from him for the modern day equivalent of $100!
Gallerist Ambroise Vollard said of Stein and her brother — they were his only clients who collected paintings “not because they were rich, but despite the fact that they weren’t.”
